PRESS RELEASE: POP THE QUESTION Art Exhibition at China Heights Gallery

 

What’s the most pertinent pop question on the planet?

 

Pop music can be flippant, political, sexy, ironic, reactionary, or romantic. But the best pop songs are those that demand answers… which is why bold graphic artists from Sydney, New York, Los Angeles and London have taken their favourite pop question and re-worked it into a piece of graphic art.

 

POP THE QUESTION, at China Heights Gallery on Crown Street from Friday February 27, has been selected in the official 2009 Mardi Gras Festival.

 

Curator Michael Wilton says, “Pop music runs through my blood. I am a pop fanatic, and I’m thrilled this exhibition allows some of the most exciting graphic artists from around the world to visually remix, re-master and re-package some big pop questions.”

 

Wilton adds:  “Since the exhibition has attracted an array of designers with different specialties, the range of work is insanely eclectic. What ties them all together, however, is that they are bold, lurid and thoroughly poptastic!”

 

For Moby’s Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?, Graeme Offord (New York) has designed a hot pink Atari-inspired computer game screen where the core of a heart is eroded by hungry space invaders; Andrew Georgiou (Sydney) re-invents How Deep Is Your Love? as a sexed up leather scene; and Wayne Moraghan (London) has immortalised Dolly Parton as a cartoon showgirl who asks the deliciously insulting Why’d You Come In Here Looking Like That?

 

Other iconic pop questions in the exhibition include Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?, What Have You Done For Me Lately?, Where’s Your Head At?, What Time Is Love?, Why Can’t I Be You?, What’s Love Got To Do With It?, Is There Something I Should Know?, Who’s That Girl?, Are You Gonna Go My Way?, What Have I Done To Deserve This?, Should I Stay Or Should I Go? and of course, Why?
